FLOOR REMOVAL, GRINDING CONCRETE. WHAT TO EXPECT.

Grinding Concrete is dusty business every time it is done. We use vacuum equipment when possible and cover doors openings and furniture, however you can expect the home to have some dust on all surfaces when completed. It is best to plan on a house cleaning after work is completed as part of the cost of the project. Tile and hardwood removal often disturb the subfloor in the same way and creates a large amount of dust. With that said, at times our clients tell us “it was much less dusty than expected”. So if you are having this work … Continue reading FLOOR REMOVAL, GRINDING CONCRETE. WHAT TO EXPECT.

HOW TO FIX A SQUEAKY FLOOR!

We often run into squeaky floors when installing a new one. At times we get a call about a new squeak after a new floor is just installed. Let’s go over a couple of issues we see on flooring projects. Before an install: Loose 2”x6” subfloor is common and can be screwed down rather than nailed. Screws do hold tighter and longer. Also if we can use glue or construction adhesive as well that will really make the correction last. Sometimes you need to add more support under the area to hold an area firm. This can be done by … Continue reading HOW TO FIX A SQUEAKY FLOOR!

WATERPROOF FLOORING ON STAIRS – STAIRNOSE OPTIONS

Laminate flooring is designed as a floating floor system. There are times we glue them down solid. Most often we would glue down a laminate floor on stairs, stair landings or at a step at top of a loft type area. We glue laminate flooring down at times for safety reasons. We want steps and stairs to be solid and not have flex or movement in these areas. Along with floating or gluing areas of laminate we may have trim options at the stairs as well. The first photo here shows a flush type laminate trim (we used different color floor … Continue reading WATERPROOF FLOORING ON STAIRS – STAIRNOSE OPTIONS

How do I clean my Bona microfiber cleaning pad, and my Bona microfiber dusting pad?

Wash your Bona duster and mop heads in the washing machine with detergent only. No fabric softener or bleach should be used. For they can damage the material. You can let them air dry (best) or put in the drier at low heat. Again not to damage the materials. The heat can deactivate or melt the fine fibers. What should I take into consideration before flooring over ceramic tile?

At times I look at the option of installing a new floor coverings over existing ceramic tile. New flooring must be installed over a suitable underlayment that is solid, stable, dry, clean and smooth. Things I take into consideration are: Is the existing tile bonded well to the subfloor? We can’t install over a old floor unless it is solid and stable. I would look the tile over for signs of bond failure such as cracks in the tile or grout. If I find any cracks I will knock on areas listening for hollow or loose spots. If I find … Continue reading What should I take into consideration before flooring over ceramic tile?

Can a swollen wooden flooring be normal again? What are the methods of recovery?

This week I was asked by Margaret: Can a swollen wooden flooring be normal again? What are the methods of recovery? This depends on the type of wood flooring and the reason for the swelling. In some cases the floor can go back down to a almost normal position. The floor needs to dry. fans, time and a dehumidifier are all tools to help. After 6 weeks the floor should be back about as best as it is going to get. Often after this time the correction if there is one involves less area. You should have an expert come … Continue reading Can a swollen wooden flooring be normal again? What are the methods of recovery?
